Krasses Teil: Fahrradcamper
We often receive inquiries from people who want to build their own bicycle trailers. Since there are hardly any ready-made options available, an extremely dedicated community has sprung up in this area. It never ceases to amaze me to see how much passion people put into making their dream of a “home on the go” a reality.
Heinrich sent us a particularly impressive project: his “Project Albatross.” This thing is a real showstopper. Heinrich didn’t want to compromise on size: He created a sleeping area measuring 200 cm and even achieved a headroom of just under two meters when the vehicle is upright. The vehicle is a whopping 260 cm long and weighs around 200 kg. Technically, it’s equipped with all the best and most expensive features—from a solar panel system with sun-tracking to an electric transmission.
When it came to the chassis and brakes, he would only consider components from us. His comment on this: “You end up buying cheap things twice.” The fact that the quality and design were just right was confirmed for him at the 4th Bicycle Caravan Meet in Luckenau: There, his Albatross was voted the most beautiful bicycle caravan.
Heinrich is already planning ahead and wants to convert the trailer into a self-contained bicycle camper. Anyone interested in the technical details can find plenty of information on YouTube under “Project Albatross” or in the specialist forum. An amazing bicycle camper project. There’s some more detailed information about it below. But this thing is definitely a showstopper. And, of course, it was built using Hinterher components.
“When planning, it was important to me to build a FaWoWa that’s long enough to provide a 200-cm sleeping area, 50 cm in front of the mattress for changing clothes, and a headroom of just under 200 cm. When I fold down the mattress and slide the slatted frame together, I have a 120 x 70-cm area to stand in. The FaWoWa is 260 cm long and 110 cm wide on the outside; the interior measures 250 cm long and 100 cm wide, and it weighs approximately 200 kg. A 400 W solar panel with a sun-tracking system is mounted on the roof. Riding height: 135 cm; standing height: 220 cm. It has an engine, an electric Pinion manual transmission, and a drive shaft with a differential and two disc brakes. The wheels, axle, drawbar, and overrun brake are, of course, from Hinterher due to their quality—and because I also received excellent advice from Mr. Hornung. If you buy cheap, you buy twice ;-)
Since the FaWoWa and the towing bike weren’t finished yet, but I wanted to go to the 4th German Bike-RV Meetup in Luckenau, I transported it on my car trailer. After unloading, there was a lot of amazement, and it was even voted the most beautiful FaWoWa there. It was actually the most innovative one, too, but they could only give one prize per category.
I’m going to convert the FaWoAn into a bicycle motorhome and ride it without the tow bike.
