Do it yourself
Building your own bike trailer is fun. And it's not particularly difficult or time-consuming. However, there are a few things to keep in mind and plan carefully. This applies above all to the exact distances and dimensions of various components and their stability. The DIY project becomes much easier if you use a few of our components. We particularly recommend our drawbar and drawbar mount, as they are perfectly matched to each other. But our axle mounts and wheels with quick-release axles also make DIY construction much easier. Here you will also find the dimensions of the drawbar mount axle mount as well as their positioning on our Hmax model.
We naturally accept no warranty, liability, or responsibility for any self-built products, even those made with our parts.
The small bicycle trailer
If you would like to build a small bicycle trailer (by which we mean models up to the size of the Hmax), we would recommend the following parts. This will give you a trailer that can carry a load of 45 kg. For trailers with a width of 52 cm or more, we recommend 20-inch wheels, as these roll over obstacles more easily. For narrower trailers, we recommend 16-inch wheels to reduce the risk of tipping.
Parts list
1x standard drawbar
1x drawbar mount stand (16 or 20 inches)
2x plastic axle mounts
2x 16 or 20-inch wheels (axle system 12/20)
2x thru axles, black or silver (axle system 12/20)
1x Weber coupling for the bicycle
Options
Webbing eyelets as lashing points for our tensioning strap with clip hooks
Rear light with stainless steel holder
Tips
For the trailer base, we recommend plywood with a thickness of at least 20 mm. The axle mounts should be slightly offset to the rear. Approximately 60% of the loading area should be towards the bicycle when viewed from the axle.
The medium-sized bicycle trailer
If you want to build a medium-sized bike trailer (by which we mean models up to the size of the Hxxl or Hxxl light), we would recommend the following parts. This will give you a trailer that can carry a load of 65 kg.
Parts list
1x standard drawbar
1x drawbar mount stand 20 inches
1x reinforcement bracket for the drawbar mount
2x aluminum clamp block D20 (axle system 12/20)
1x rigid axle stainless steel. Please allow at least 7 mm protrusion on each side, 2.7 cm per side for fat tires (axle system 12/20)
2x 20-inch wheels (axle system 12/20)
2x thru axles, black or silver (axle system 12/20)
1x Weber coupling for the bicycle
Options
Webbing eyelets as lashing points for our tensioning strap with clip hooks
Rear light withstainless steel holder
Tips
For the trailer base, we recommend plywood with a thickness of at least 20 mm. The axle mounts should be slightly offset to the rear of the center. Approximately 60% of the loading area should be towards the bicycle when viewed from the axle.
The large bicycle trailer
With large bicycle trailers, it is particularly important to ensure that they are lightweight to maximize the payload. With our heavy-duty drawbar system, large trailers can achieve a maximum load of 100 kg.
Parts list
1x SL heavy-duty drawbar (lockable)
1x drawbar mount
1x URSUS two-leg stand
2x aluminum clamping block D20 (axle system 12/20)
1x rigid axle stainless steel. Please allow at least 7 mm protrusion on each side, 2.7 cm per side for fat tires (axle system 12/20)
2x 20-inch wheels (axle system 12/20). We recommend Schwalbe Super Moto X tires
2x thru axles, black or silver (axle system 12/20)
1x Weber coupling for the bicycle (the Weber ES coupling is approved for up to 100 kg).
Options
Webbing eyelets as lashing points for our tension belt with clip hooks
Rear light withstainless steel holder
Tips
Due to the high weight, we no longer recommend plywood as base material for large DIY trailers. We would recommend aluminum profiles (3x3) and a thin plate of plywood for a continuous loading area, if desired. The axle should be slightly offset to the rear. Approximately 60% of the loading area should be towards the bicycle when viewed from the axle. Please design the trailer in a way that the attachement points for the axle and drawbarmount are structurally sound and can take the stress.
The bicycle
caravan
When building a bicycle caravan, it is essential to ensure that the total weight is as low as possible. We recommend our H2O trailer as the basis for building a bicycle caravan. This means that all chassis parts are attached to the H2O (wheels, drawbar) and the actual caravan construction does not have to absorb the forces of driving, or hardly any, and can therefore be built to be lightweight. The caravan body is bolted to the H2O itself and to the H2O hull support. As a basis, we recommend the customized H2O with the following equipment, which you can find in the configurator. The H2O/80 has a width of 80 cm, which can be widened with extension axles.
Configuration H2O
Basic model: H2O/66 or H2/80
Extension: None
Axles: Pull-out axle H2O-80 stainless steel 21 cm (axle system 12/20)
Wheels: Pair of wheels 20"x 2.40 Super Moto X
Low drawbar: 1x SL center drawbar 1 (with extension adapter)
1-2x SL drawbar extension
1x H2O hull support for boats and boards
1x Weber coupling for the bicycle
Optional
4x lowerable supports
1x parking brake (pair)
Tips
The H2O must be positioned so that approx. 60% of the caravan is facing the bicycle. Now calculate how many centimeters this 60% amounts to. You can now assemble the necessary SL drawbar extensions.
